Can I stay in Czechia after graduating?
Yes, and with a dedicated tool: graduates holding a study residence permit can apply for a 9-month long-term residence permit to look for work or start a business. Czech-school graduates also carry free access to the labour market, which means any employer, no vacancy registry, and the gentler reporting rules, often the stronger card to play.
Who this is for: Final-year students and fresh graduates of Czech higher education on a study residence permit, and researchers finishing a hosted project.
Not for: Students who abandoned the programme before completing it, the job-seeking permit follows a FINISHED study, and exchange students whose home degree is elsewhere, whose options need case-by-case reading.
The job-seeking permit
Job-seeking residence permit after finishing study or research — how long it lasts
9 months
Holders of a long-term residence permit for scientific research or for study under § 64(a) who want to stay to look for work or start a business after finishing. It is a fixed term and is not the same as the Employee Card grace period, which is 90 days after employment ends.

The wording the rule above was read from. It is the authoritative text, and it is in Czech.

File before your study permit runs out, from inside the country; a proper filing keeps you protected while it is decided, see fikce pobytu. The 9 months are fixed: the point is runway, not residence for its own sake, and the next permit is the real destination.
The graduate advantage most people miss
Graduates of Czech schools have free access to the labour market under the Employment Act. Practically: any job, no central-registry vacancy, a non-dual Employee Card that documents residence while the work right is yours already, and job changes on the 3-working-days reporting rule instead of the 30-days-before procedure, see changing employer.
- 1Finishing soon: decide whether you need the 9-month runway at all, a signed contract can take you straight to the Employee Card application.
- 2On the runway: interview freely, any offer works, the vacancy registry is other people’s problem, see which jobs need it.
- 3Offer signed: file the Employee Card (non-dual, on your free access) or Blue Card if you qualify, see the comparison.
The business route instead
The 9-month permit covers starting a business too: the trade licence (živnostenský list) plus a switch to a business-purpose residence is a real graduate path, with its own guide, see the trade licence guide.
Quick questions
- Do my student years count toward permanent residence?
- They count at a reduced weight for the 5-year calculation; the rule and its source are in the permanent residence guide. The 9 job-seeking months are ordinary long-term residence for the count.
- Can the 9 months be extended?
- It is a fixed-term bridge, not a renewable status. Before it ends you switch to the permit your new life actually has: employment, business, family.
- I graduated two years ago abroad. Does any of this help me?
- The job-seeking permit follows a Czech study permit directly, and free access belongs to Czech-school graduates. A foreign degree points you to the ordinary routes: the registry jobs, or the Blue Card if the degree and salary fit.
