I moved. When must I report my new Czech address?

It depends on your permit, and the law really does use three different clocks. Long-stay visa and long-term residence holders: within 30 days, if the new address is for more than 30 days. Permanent residents, residence-card holders and registered EU citizens: within 30 working days, if it is for more than 180 days. And a changed passport, surname or marital status: within 3 working days, whoever you are.

Who this is for: Foreigners living in Czechia who moved home, renewed or replaced a passport, married, divorced, or changed their name.

Not for: Registering your very first address after arriving in the country, which is its own duty with its own clock, see arrival registration.

Which clock is yours

Deadline to report a change of address — long-stay visa or long-term residence permit holders

Within 30 days of the change, if the new address will be yours for more than 30 days

Foreigners residing on a long-stay (over-90-day) visa or a long-term residence permit, including Employee Card and Blue Card holders. The duty only bites if the move is expected to last MORE THAN 30 DAYS. Report to the Ministry of the Interior.

“§ 98(3): "(3) Cizinec, který pobývá na území na vízum k pobytu nad 90 dnů nebo na povolení k dlouhodobému pobytu, je povinen hlásit změnu místa pobytu na území do 30 dnů ode dne změny ministerstvu. Povinnost se na cizince vztahuje, pokud předpokládaná změna místa pobytu bude delší než 30 dnů."”

Deadline to report a change of address — permanent residence, residence card, and EU citizens

Within 30 WORKING days of the change, if the new address will be yours for more than 180 days

Holders of a residence card (pobytová karta), family members issued a residence permit document under § 117a, and EU citizens holding a registration certificate or permanent residence. The duty only bites if the move is expected to last MORE THAN 180 DAYS. People on a long-term residence permit are under a different deadline with a different trigger, so do not read across from one to the other.

Deadline to report a change of address — people staying without a visa

Within 30 days of the change, if you know it will last more than 90 days

Foreigners entitled to transitional residence WITHOUT a visa. Report to the police for the new place of residence. The duty only bites if you know the move will last MORE THAN 90 DAYS.

Notice the thresholds: a short sublet does not trigger the duty. The long-term rule bites only when the new address is yours for more than 30 days, the permanent-residence rule above 180 days, and the visa-free rule above 90. A two-week stay at a friend’s place while your lease starts is not a reportable move.

Passport, name and marital status: the fast clock

Deadline to report a change of surname, marital status, or passport details

Within 3 WORKING days of the change

All foreigners, for changes to surname, marital status, travel-document data, or the data in a document issued under the Aliens Act. Report to the authority that issued your residence document. This is NOT the address rule — address changes have their own, longer deadlines.

This is the one people miss: the leisurely 30-day rhythm of address changes does NOT apply to a new passport or a changed surname. Those are 3 working days, to the authority that issued your residence document.

What missing the deadline costs

Fine for missing a reporting deadline — arrival registration, change of address, change of name or passport details

Up to 3,000 CZK

Third-country nationals and EU citizens who fail a duty under § 93(1) or (2) of the Aliens Act (registering after arrival) or § 98(1), (3), (4) or (5) of the Aliens Act (reporting a change of address), and those who fail § 103(b), (d), (e) or (r). A DIFFERENT and much higher ceiling of 10,000 Kc exists in the same section, but it applies to other offences — § 156(1)(i), (l), (m) and (o) to (q) — not to these.

The fine is a ceiling, not a price list, and the quieter cost is practical: decisions and summonses go to your registered address, and a letter you never saw still counts as delivered in many procedures. Keeping the address current is cheaper than every alternative.

How to file it

  1. 1Collect proof of the new address: typically your lease, or the owner’s signed confirmation, see proof of accommodation.
  2. 2Report to the Ministry of the Interior (OAMP) office for your new address; EU citizens and their family members and visa-free stays report to the police where the rule says so. The change notification form walks through the fields.
  3. 3If the change must also appear on your card itself, that re-issue is a separate, paid step, see the fees answer.

Quick questions

My lease is month-to-month. Is that “more than 30 days”?
The test is how long the address will actually be yours, not the notice period of the lease. A rolling lease you intend to live at is a reportable address.
Do I report a move within the same building?
A different apartment is a different address. The same deadlines apply; the filing is just short.
I renewed my passport but nothing else changed. Really 3 working days?
Yes. Travel-document data is on the fast clock, 3 working days, to the authority that issued your residence document.
